Frameless Glass Balustrades — East Auckland
A frameless glass balustrade is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to your home. By replacing traditional timber or steel balustrades with clear toughened glass, you open up your view, flood your space with natural light, and create a sophisticated aesthetic that adds real value to your property.
At Howick Glass, we design, supply and install frameless glass balustrades for decks, staircases, mezzanines, juliet balconies and internal features throughout East Auckland and the wider Auckland region.
All our balustrades are manufactured using 12mm or 17.5mm toughened safety glass and installed to comply with NZS 4223 and the New Zealand Building Code. Our glaziers carry out a precise on-site template before manufacture, ensuring every panel fits perfectly.

Glass Balustrade Types & Styles
There are several frameless glass balustrade systems available, each offering a slightly different aesthetic and structural approach:
Spigot-Fixed Balustrades
Glass panels are supported by metal spigots (posts) fixed to the deck or substrate at regular intervals. This is the most common frameless system — clean, modern, and cost-effective. Spigots are available in polished stainless steel, satin stainless, matte black, and other finishes.
Channel-Fixed Balustrades
A continuous stainless steel or aluminium channel is fixed to the substrate and the glass is set into it, creating an ultra-clean look with no visible spigots. Ideal for decks, pool fencing, and interior staircases where a seamless appearance is desired.
Juliet Balconies
A glass panel fixed flush to the wall in front of a door or window opening — typically used on upper-level bedrooms or living areas to allow windows or doors to be opened safely while preventing falls.
Handrail Options
Frameless glass balustrades can be supplied with a stainless steel, timber or no-handrail top depending on building code requirements and aesthetic preference.
Glass Balustrade Compliance in NZ
All glass balustrades in New Zealand must comply with NZS 4223:2016 (Glazing in Buildings) and the New Zealand Building Code Clause F4 (Safety from Falling).
Key compliance requirements include:
Glass Thickness
For frameless (unframed) balustrades, a minimum of 12mm toughened glass is required for standard residential heights. Larger spans or higher-load situations may require 15mm or 17.5mm laminated toughened glass.
Balustrade Height
Balustrades must be at least 1.0m high when the fall height is greater than 1.0m, and at least 0.9m high for lower fall heights. Internal staircases typically require 0.9m minimum.
Non-Climbable Zone
The design must include a non-climbable zone for the first 760mm of height to prevent children from climbing the balustrade.
Our glaziers are fully familiar with NZ compliance requirements and will ensure your installation meets all code requirements. We can also provide documentation for your building consent if required.

In most cases, replacing an existing balustrade with glass does not require building consent. However, if you are adding a new balustrade or changing the structural configuration, consent may be required. We can advise you based on your specific situation.
Most residential frameless balustrades use 12mm toughened safety glass. For larger spans, higher loads, or pool enclosures, 17.5mm laminated toughened glass may be recommended. We will specify the correct thickness for your application during the quoting stage.
Glass balustrades are very low maintenance. A regular wipe-down with warm soapy water and a squeegee is all that's needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners or metal scrubbers. For hard water stains, a diluted white vinegar solution works well.
Yes, in most cases. Our glazier will assess the structural condition of your deck during the measure visit. The substrate needs to be in good condition to accept the balustrade fixings. We'll advise if any preparation work is required.
