Window Rubbering & Reputting — East Auckland

Window seals and glazing compounds don’t last forever. Over time, the rubber gaskets in aluminium windows harden and crack, and the putty in timber windows dries, shrinks and falls away. At Howick Glass, we provide professional window rubbering and reputting throughout East Auckland — restoring weatherproofing, stopping draughts, and extending the life of your existing windows.

    What's Included

    Benefits of Rubbering & Reputting

    Stop Draughts

Perished seals allow cold air in and warm air out. New rubber and putty restores a tight seal.

    Prevent Water Ingress

Failed seals allow water to penetrate frames, causing rot in timber and corrosion in aluminium.

    Extend Window Life

Resealing your windows is far more cost-effective than window replacement.

    Improve Thermal Performance

Air-tight windows perform better thermally — keeping your home warmer in winter.

    Secure Loose Glass

Failed glazing compound can allow glass to shift in the frame. Reputting makes it secure again.

    Restore Appearance

Fresh putty, properly painted, restores the tidy appearance of timber window frames.

    Aluminium Window Rubbering

Most aluminium windows are glazed using EPDM rubber gaskets that harden and crack over time — particularly on north and west-facing windows exposed to UV. Signs of failed aluminium window rubber include draughts, condensation on reveals, water ingress, and glass that feels loose in the frame. We source the correct EPDM profile for your joinery system and replace the perished gasket.

    Timber Window Reputting

Timber windows in older NZ homes are typically glazed with linseed oil putty that dries and falls away over time. Reputting involves raking out old putty, priming the timber rebate, and applying fresh linseed oil putty. Painting should be done 4–6 weeks after reputting. We recommend reputting every 15–25 years as part of an overall window maintenance programme.

    FAQ

    Rubbering & Reputting FAQs

Look for draughts around window edges, water penetration after rain, cracked or missing putty, or hardened/cracked rubber in aluminium windows. If you can feel a draught or see daylight around a closed window, it's time to reseal.

No — painting is the homeowner's responsibility and should be done 4–6 weeks after reputting once the putty has cured sufficiently.

Yes — for whole-house rubbering or reputting projects, we'll assess all windows and complete the work in one or two visits.

If the frame is in good structural condition, rerubbering is almost always the more cost-effective option. We'll give you an honest assessment.
