Glass Pool Fencing
Premium frameless glass pool fencing for East Auckland homes. NZS 8500 compliant, beautifully installed — protect your pool without blocking your view.
Glass Pool Fencing — Safe, Compliant & Stunning
Glass pool fencing is the premier choice for New Zealand homeowners who want to protect their pool area without sacrificing their outdoor aesthetic. Unlike timber or aluminium pool fences, glass provides full visibility across your pool zone — essential for supervising children — while creating a resort-like visual that enhances your outdoor space.
At Howick Glass, we install frameless and semi-frameless glass pool fencing systems throughout East Auckland, from Half Moon Bay and Howick to Beachlands, Maraetai and beyond. Every installation meets or exceeds the NZS 8500 Pool Fencing Standard — because safety is non-negotiable.
Our team handles the complete process: site assessment, compliance advice, precise measure, glass supply, and professional installation. We also assist with pool fence gate hardware and self-closing, self-latching mechanisms.

NZS 8500 Pool Fencing Requirements in NZ
All pool fencing in New Zealand must comply with NZS 8500:2006 (Safety Barriers and Fences Around Swimming Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs for Residential Properties). Key requirements include:
Minimum Height
Pool barriers must be at least 1.2m high measured from the outside of the fence.
Non-Climbable Zone
There must be a 900mm non-climbable zone — no horizontal rails, footholds, or furniture within this zone that could assist climbing.
Gate Requirements
All gates must be self-closing and self-latching. The latch must be on the pool side (or at a height inaccessible to children if on the outer side). Gates must not open inward toward the pool.
Ground Clearance
Gaps under the fence must be no more than 100mm. This is critical for frameless glass installations fixed to uneven ground.
Inspection
Pool fencing must be inspected by your local council. We can advise on the inspection process and ensure your installation is inspection-ready.
Frameless vs Semi-Frameless Pool Fencing
There are two main glass pool fencing systems — frameless and semi-frameless:
Frameless Glass Pool Fencing
Individual glass panels are supported by stainless steel spigots fixed to the ground or pool coping. There are no vertical posts between panels — just glass, creating an almost invisible barrier. This is the premium option and creates the cleanest, most resort-like aesthetic. Typically uses 12mm toughened glass.
Semi-Frameless Glass Pool Fencing
Glass panels are supported by stainless steel posts at set intervals. The posts are more visible than spigots but the overall look is still modern and clean. Semi-frameless systems are slightly more cost-effective than fully frameless and can be easier to install on uneven ground. Typically uses 8mm or 10mm toughened glass.
Which Is Better?
Both systems are equally safe and NZS 8500 compliant when correctly installed. Frameless is the premium aesthetic choice; semi-frameless is the practical choice for challenging sites or tighter budgets. We’ll advise which is most suitable for your property during the site assessment.
Glass Pool Fencing FAQs
Frameless glass pool fencing typically costs $350–$750 per linear metre installed in New Zealand. Factors affecting price include glass thickness, hardware type, site complexity and gate requirements. Contact us for a free site assessment and quote.
The fence itself doesn't require a building consent, but it must pass a pool fencing inspection by your local council (Auckland Council in most cases). We install to NZS 8500 and our installations consistently pass inspection. We can advise you on the inspection process.
Yes, with appropriate planning. Frameless spigot systems can be stepped to accommodate a slope, maintaining the minimum 1.2m height requirement. For very steep grades, semi-frameless systems with posts may be more practical. Our glazier will assess your site and recommend the best approach.
We use 12mm toughened safety glass (AS/NZS 2208 certified) for frameless pool fencing, and 8mm or 10mm for semi-frameless systems. All glass is tempered to resist impact and break safely if damaged.
Glass pool fencing requires minimal maintenance. Rinse periodically with fresh water (especially in coastal areas) and clean with soapy water and a squeegee. Check spigot fixings annually and reseal any ground-level silicone as required.
