Frameless Showers & Sliding Doors: Transforming Your Home’s Indoor-Outdoor Living

    April 18, 2026 2 min read

The Power of Frameless Glass in Your Home

Two areas of the home where frameless glass makes the biggest visual impact: the bathroom and the transition between your living area and your outdoor deck. A frameless shower screen opens up a bathroom instantly. A frameless glass sliding door blurs the line between inside and outside in a way no other product can match.

We install both across East Auckland, and the questions we get asked are surprisingly similar for each.

Frameless Shower Screens — What to Consider

The first decision is fixed panel vs door. A fixed frameless shower screen (sometimes called a wet room screen) is a single panel of glass — simple, clean, and easy to clean. A frameless shower door adds a hinged or pivot door for a fully enclosed shower.

Glass thickness matters. Most residential frameless shower screens use 10mm toughened glass. Heavier 12mm glass gives a more substantial feel and is often used in larger enclosures. Hardware finish — chrome, brushed nickel, or matte black — should complement your tapware and fittings.

One practical tip: ask about the glass coating. A nano-coating or similar treatment makes the glass significantly easier to keep clean by repelling water and soap scum. It’s worth the small additional cost.

Frameless Sliding Doors — Top-Hung vs Bottom Track

For indoor-outdoor sliding doors, you have two main system choices. Top-hung panels hang from a ceiling-mounted track — there’s nothing on the floor, which gives a completely seamless transition between inside and outside. Bottom-track systems run on a floor channel, which suits heavier panels and exposed exterior applications.

For most East Auckland homes with a covered deck connection, top-hung is the more popular choice for its clean aesthetic. For larger or more exposed openings, bottom-track offers more stability.
