How to Keep Your Glass Looking Great: A Maintenance Guide for East Auckland Homes

    May 2, 2026 2 min read

Glass Is Low Maintenance — But Not No Maintenance

One of the selling points of glass is how easy it is to keep clean compared to timber or wrought iron. But “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance.” A little regular attention keeps your glass installations looking sharp for years — and avoids more costly issues down the track.

Here’s what our glaziers recommend for the most common glass installations in East Auckland homes.

    Frameless Shower Screens

The biggest enemy of shower glass is soap scum and mineral deposit buildup from hard water. The best approach is prevention: squeegee the glass after every shower, and give it a proper clean weekly with a non-abrasive glass cleaner.

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scourers — they’ll scratch the glass surface and make it harder to clean in future. For stubborn buildup, a solution of white vinegar and water works well.

If your shower glass has a protective nano-coating, it will be significantly more resistant to buildup — but still benefits from regular cleaning.

    Glass Balustrades & Pool Fencing

Outdoor glass gets the full Auckland weather treatment — salt air if you’re near the coast, bird droppings, pollen, and general grime. A wash down with a hose and mild detergent every few weeks keeps things looking good. For stubborn marks, use a quality glass cleaner and a soft cloth or squeegee.

Check the spigots and hardware annually. If you notice any movement or looseness, contact a glazier promptly — don’t leave it.

    Glass Splashbacks

Kitchen splashbacks are exposed to cooking grease and steam. A wipe-down after cooking with a damp cloth prevents buildup. For a deeper clean, a spray glass cleaner works well. Avoid anything abrasive near the edges where the glass meets the silicone seal.

    Windows & Double Glazing

Clean your windows with a glass cleaner and a squeegee or lint-free cloth. For double-glazed units, if you notice condensation or fogging between the panes, the seal has failed — the unit needs to be replaced, not cleaned. Contact us for a quote on replacement.

    When to Call a Glazier

If you notice chips, cracks, loose hardware, or failed seals on any glass installation, don’t leave it. Small issues can become bigger (and more expensive) ones. Howick Glass offers repair and maintenance services across East Auckland — call 09 535 4180 or get in touch.
