NZ Safety Standards — What You Need to Know
Glass balustrades and pool fencing in New Zealand must meet specific safety standards. For pool fencing, NZS 8500:2006 sets out the requirements — panels must be at least 1.2m high, with no gaps greater than 100mm, and no climbable footholds within 900mm of the top of the fence.
All glass used in balustrades and pool fencing must be toughened (tempered) safety glass. When toughened glass breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces rather than dangerous shards. This is not optional — it’s a building code requirement.

Frameless vs Semi-Frameless — Which Is Right for You?
Frameless glass balustrades use spigots (stainless steel base fittings) drilled into the deck or floor structure. There are no vertical posts interrupting the glass line — just clean, unbroken panels. This gives the most open, contemporary look.
Semi-frameless systems use posts at the corners and panel joins. They’re slightly less expensive and can suit more traditional home styles. For most modern East Auckland homes, frameless is the preferred choice.
What Does It Cost?
Glass balustrade pricing varies depending on the length of run, glass thickness, hardware finish, and site complexity. As a rough guide, residential frameless glass balustrades typically start from around $400–$600 per lineal metre installed. Pool fencing projects are priced similarly.
